Electric car registrations hit record high.

Registrations of electric cars ended 2017 on a high, with a record market share in December.

Alternatively fuelled vehicles accounted for nearly 3% of all new cars registered in the last month of the year.

The numbers come from the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders), which tracks new vehicle registrations every month.

2017 was a record year for plugin cars in general. Some 47,164 were registered, up 28% on the previous year and accounting for 1.9% of the new car market share.

Tim Payne, CEO of InstaVolt, said: “Of course the electric car market still remains small compared to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. That’s to be expected as the technology is still relatively new and it takes time for consumers to consider such a stepchange.

“However, these latest figures show a strong year of continual growth for plug-ins and we’re extremely confident that this will continue in 2018. Electric cars are becoming an increasingly attractive option for motorists, particularly with innovations in battery technology increasing their range.”
