As part of McDonald’s nationwide partnership with leading electric vehicle charge point operator, InstaVolt, in February 2023, McDonald’s installed two electric vehicle chargers at its Alperton, Hanger Lane (Ealing) restaurant. This initiative was driven by customers’ requests for a convenient place to charge their vehicles while enjoying a bite to eat at the McDonald’s restaurant.

Additionally, with many high-rise buildings in the area, there was a clear need for local charging options, for those who are unable to charge at home.

The initial success of these chargers was evident through the positive feedback and continuous demand from customers for additional charging points to be installed at the restaurant. In response, the restaurant decided to work with InstaVolt to expand its offering by adding four more chargers, bringing the total to six ultra-rapid charging points at the branch.

Understanding the importance of charger accessibility, the new expansion features an accessible bay, for those with additional access needs. The bay is compliant with the BSI accessibility standard for charging, PAS1899:2022, and features 1.2metres of space on all four sides of the parking bay to allow for easier manoeuvrability. The decision was inspired by McDonald’s Franchisee, Reema Mavani, whose mother is disabled and was supported by InstaVolt. Recognising the lack of accessible charging options in the local area, it was crucial to address this need when expanding this site.

McDonald’s Franchisee, Reema Mavani, said: “Working closely with InstaVolt, we have made it a priority to ensure that our charging facilities serve the entire community, accommodating every individual in need of a charge.

“This expansion underscores our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers and supporting the transition to sustainable transportation. We are excited to offer enhanced services and contribute positively to our local area.”

Simon Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at InstaVolt said: “We’re delighted to be expanding the site at McDonald’s Alperton just 18 months after it was first opened to the public. Being able to work with engaged franchisees like Reema is critical to the continued growth of EV infrastructure, ensuring that convenient and accessible EV charging solutions are available to drivers.

“We aim to deliver a great charging experience for our drivers by making our sites user friendly. This covers several aspects including ease of charger use, payment options, lighting and access. With the inclusion of an accessible bay at the Alperton site, we’re affirming our commitment to make charging accessible to all.

“With more than 400 chargers situated at 230+ McDonald’s restaurants across the UK, the partnership is supporting existing EV drivers, while giving confidence to those considering making the switch to electric.”

The six-charger site is now fully operational, and all chargers can be started using any contactless payment card, or by using the optional InstaVolt mobile app.
