InstaVolt welcomes the Government expansion of Permitted Development Rights for EV charging infrastructure
InstaVolt is pleased to welcome today’s changes to the UK’s planning regulations, which expand Permitted Development (PD) rights for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
The revised regulations offer more generous parameters than ever before – relaxing restrictions around the height and placement of charging units, including proximity to highways and other key infrastructure. These updates provide greater flexibility in design and support a faster deployment of modern EV charging infrastructure across the country.
Last year, the Government committed to expanding the PD rights, recognising the urgent national need to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and support the UK’s journey to carbon neutrality. As of today, that commitment has been delivered.
For InstaVolt, these changes represent a positive shift in how quickly and efficiently we develop new charging sites, supporting our target of 11,000 chargers by 2030. By narrowing the gap between what qualifies as PD and what typically requires full planning permission, the revised regulations will help simplify and speed up the overall process.
With over 1.5 million EVs now on UK roads, and that number growing daily, streamlining the planning process is vital to meeting rising demand as the UK moves towards its 2035 deadline to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars.
Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, commented,
“We are supportive of the Government acting proactively and moving in a positive direction. Anything that helps remove barriers to EV adoption and gives all drivers confidence in the infrastructure – helping remove range anxiety – is a strong move in the right direction. We look forward to continued support from the Government as the UK transitions to EVs,”
