InstaVolt, the UK’s leading provider of rapid EV charging, is setting a new standard for sustainable charging with the installation of an 870-panel solar farm at the new Winchester Superhub. This innovative energy system integrates solar power, battery storage, and renewable grid electricity to create one of the most advanced and resilient EV charging sites in the country.

The on-site solar farm will generate 500kW of renewable energy, directly feeding two large Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 960kW/4MWh. These batteries serve as the primary power source for the chargers, storing solar energy and ensuring a consistent supply of clean electricity. Should battery levels run low, the site seamlessly transitions to grid energy supplied by 100% renewable sources from Octopus Energy, while solar power continues to replenish the storage systems.

By combining solar energy with battery storage, the Winchester Superhub significantly reduces reliance on the national grid, cutting energy costs and minimising the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades. This intelligent energy management system dynamically determines the most efficient power source at any given time, optimizing energy use and enhancing the sustainability of InstaVolt’s charging network.

“Integrating renewable energy solutions like on-site solar generation and battery storage is a game-changer for public EV charging,” said Delvin Lane, CEO at InstaVolt. “Not only does this help us lower operational expenses to keep our fixed rate per kWh, but it also makes EV charging more affordable and accessible, removing key barriers to widespread EV adoption.”

The Winchester Superhub is a testament to InstaVolt’s commitment to pioneering sustainable charging solutions. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, future-proofing the UK’s charging infrastructure with renewable energy innovations will play a crucial role in ensuring a cleaner, greener future.

The Winchester Superhub officially launches on 24th March, where visitors can see the impressive solar array in action.
