With more than 20 years-experience in the energy and renewable energy sector, Matthew is well-recognised in the Operations field, having started at InstaVolt on day one as Director of Operations, before being appointed as Chief Operating Officer.

Prior to his time at InstaVolt, Matthew was Director of Energy Efficiency at Anesco Ltd, one of the top 100 cleantech companies in the world, where he played a crucial role in delivering energy efficiency projects. During his time there, Matthew grew turnover in his business unit to £45million in just 18 months. Additionally, Matthew sat on steering groups with Ofgem and the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (formerly the Department of Energy & Climate Change) inputting directly to the future policy for the Energy Efficiency Market.

Gary Kirkland

With proven experience in the UK renewables and energy sectors, Gary joined InstaVolt in 2020 as Chief Technology Officer.

Prior to his career at InstaVolt, Gary was at multinational energy company SSE plc where he was responsible for the development of Mayflower Complete Lighting Control Systems, an innovative product to reduce energy consumption for the UK’s street lighting. Prior to that Gary held a senior role at Anesco Ltd, a leading energy efficiency business.

Gary is responsible for developing the technology offering for InstaVolt customers, including the InstaVolt app, which complements its market-leading contactless payment option.

Simon Smith

Chief Commercial Officer

Smith joins InstaVolt from eEnergy Group plc, where he enjoyed a highly successful term as Managing Director of the Energy Efficiency Division, where he was responsible for driving both growth and the integration of acquisitions in the UK and Ireland. Between 2021 and 2023 he tripled sales, escalating them to £26 million, by introducing innovative Energy as a Service (EAAS) products to the market. These included Solar and Battery Storage Systems, Workplace EV Charging Stations, and Energy Analytics Solutions.

Previously he was the Group Sales and Marketing Director with Yu Energy plc, which supplied gas, electricity, water and EV to the UK corporate sector. As part of the Executive Management team, he was responsible for the strategic leadership of the sales and marketing functions, doubling the average monthly bookings in 2020 and continuing a significant growth trend, increasing turnover from £80m to £150m+ in the space of two years. Simon also worked to deliver a turnaround strategy involving a new digital sales and marketing strategy including growth for indirect sales channels.

Neil Hutchings

With more than 25 years’  experience in the renewable energy sector, Neil joined InstaVolt in 2022 as International Development Director.

As International Development Director, Neil will spearhead the company’s growth into European markets including Portugal, Spain and Iceland, as well as progressing its move into Ireland in early 2023.

Prior to his appointment at InstaVolt, Neil was at multinational energy firm, SSE, and during his 23 years with the company held positions including National Development Director and Managing Director of Telecoms and Utility Solutions. Neil held director roles in operations and technical services at energy efficiency firm, Anesco, before founding his own energy consultancy.

With over 15 years of experience within the renewable sector, Lily has a strong track-record for driving sustainable change at senior level. Prior to joining InstaVolt, Lily worked as New Energy Director at SMS plc – focusing on management of renewable energy investments and battery storage projects, having previously worked at energy efficiency company Anesco, leading a subsidy-free solar farm which received government and worldwide acclaim.

At InstaVolt, Lily is responsible for leading InstaVolt’s Super Hub developments across the country, planning and negotiating with Landlords and the National Grid to install reliable and accessible infrastructure for EV drivers in the UK.

Laura Ward

An experienced in-house legal professional, Laura started her role at InstaVolt in 2017 following more than 10 years’ legal experience in the renewable energy sector.

As Head of Legal, Laura is responsible for the in-house legal team, ensuring that InstaVolt’s network of assets have the necessary land rights and security. Laura has a strong track record in land law and company law and has held roles at renewable energy firms SSE and Anesco prior to her appointment at InstaVolt.

Rachael Kendrew

Rachael joined InstaVolt in 2017, as part of the Pre-Construction Team. With more than eight years’ experience in the renewable sector, Rachael has a demonstrated history working in the industry, holding roles at SSE and Anesco prior to her position at InstaVolt.

Today Rachael heads up our Project Development Team and is responsible for all location approvals, site designs, drawings, planning and general project development, before progressing projects through to the construction team.

With more than a decade of sales experience, Nathan joined the InstaVolt team in 2020.

As Head of Sales and Business Development, Nathan manages InstaVolt’s nationwide roll out of rapid charging stations across the company’s partner portfolios, supporting the company’s ambitions to install 10,000 rapid chargers by 2032. Nathan is responsible for ongoing client management with InstaVolt’s partners, ensuring new locations are progressed efficiently.

Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) Manager

With twenty years of experience in the health, safety, environment, and quality (HSEQ) field, Rachel has demonstrated expertise in the water industry, house building sector, and the multi-utilities sector.

In her role at InstaVolt, Rachel drives HSEQ culture. Her tasks encompass internal audits for ISO accreditations, policy updates, accident log maintenance, and generating reports for the Health and Safety Committee and executives. She also conducts HSE inspections for both internal and external stakeholders.

Darren Rees

An experienced Operations Manager, Darren joined InstaVolt in 2022 and has previously enjoyed a successful career with multinational companies across a range of sectors.

In his role as Head of Operations and Maintenance, Darren is responsible for the performance reliability and maintenance of the InstaVolt network, managing the company’s Network Performance Team, team of Field Engineers and warehouse/logistic operations. Darren also oversees InstaVolt’s Customer Service Team who deliver our leading customer support.

With more than 15 years’ experience in the contracting and energy supply industry. Tim joined InstaVolt in March 2022 as the Head of Delivery.

Tim is responsible for two key elements involved with the rollout of the InstaVolt network; overseeing the Connections Team, applying for the grid connections that enable the provision of electricity to our fantastic chargers locations. Also managing our team of Project Managers in the Delivery Team to ensure the swift rollout of rapid charging to the InstaVolt network to reach 10,000 chargers on the network by 2032.

Prior to joining InstaVolt, Tim spent 14 years at SSE – involved with various projects from low voltage connections all the way up 132kV Grid Substations. Most recently, Tim spent time working within Leep Utilities overseeing the adoption of Electric and Water networks.

Imogen is InstaVolt’s Marketing Manager and has been with the company since 2020.

Imogen has more than nine years’ PR and marketing experience and has a strong track record of building and executing marketing functions for multinational automotive businesses. In her role as Marketing Manager, Imogen oversees all marketing activities across the business, supporting InstaVolt’s continued growth.
