New photo provides glimpse of Winchester EV superhub development
The development of InstaVolt’s Electric Vehicle (EV) ultra-rapid charging superhub at Three Maids Hill, Winchester, has reached a significant milestone, with the asphalt layer now complete across the site.
Notably, this asphalt layer is designed to be permeable, allowing rainwater to pass through and reducing surface runoff. This feature supports the site’s overall sustainability efforts by aiding natural water drainage and minimising the environmental impact of the development.
This achievement paves the way for the next phases of the project, including bay marking and charger installations, bringing this state-of-the-art charging destination closer to operational status.
Once complete, InstaVolt’s latest superhub will boast 44 accessible, ultra-rapid chargers powered by 100% renewable energy. It will serve as a critical node in the UK’s EV infrastructure, supporting the increasing number of motorists transitioning to electric vehicles.

The Winchester superhub is set to be one of the UK’s most sustainable EV charging destinations, powered by an intelligent system which optimises solar use, reduces grid reliance and keeps the chargers running at maximum capacity.
Solar panels, with a 500kW capacity, feed two on-site batteries (totalling 4MWh) to provide the primary power for chargers. When necessary, the system will automatically switch to 100% renewable energy supplied by Octopus Energy.
The latest update is one of several recent milestones that mark substantial progress at the site.
All 44 EV charger pads have now been fully installed, laying the groundwork for the deployment of ultra-rapid charging units.
Over 54,000 permeable blocks have been delivered, with 26,000 laid to create durable and environmentally conscious footways that will enhance driver and pedestrian experience.
Set to be the UK’s most sustainable EV charging superhub, solar panels have been mounted on the café roof, and an additional solar farm of almost 900 panels will be installed on-site which will contribute renewable energy directly to the site.
Security infrastructure has also advanced, with CCTV bases installed, ensuring the site will provide a safe and secure environment for all users.
The Winchester superhub is designed to offer more than just charging. With an on-site café hosted by one of the UK’s leading coffee brands, accessible charging bays, and drive-through options for towing vehicles, the superhub will provide convenience and comfort for all EV drivers.
Strategically located near the busy A34 and close to the M3, this superhub will cater to long-distance travellers and residents alike.
It underscores InstaVolt’s commitment to expanding the UK’s EV charging network with dependable and accessible solutions, offering EV drivers the confidence to travel without range anxiety.
