We’re proud to announce a major milestone in the development of the UK’s public charging infrastructure, with the battery storage installation at Welcome Break Corley Services (M6 northbound) now fully operational.

This project marks a significant step forward for us and for the industry. Corley is the first motorway service station in the UK where battery storage is connected directly to ultra-rapid chargers, creating a smarter and more resilient way to support high-power charging on some of the country’s busiest routes. The installation forms part of our wider programme to roll out energy storage across our network, helping us deliver consistent, scalable and sustainable charging as EV adoption continues to grow.

The large on-site battery system at Corley stores electricity and distributes it directly to our chargers, reducing reliance on major grid upgrades and ensuring reliable performance during periods of high demand. It also helps manage standing and capacity charges, supporting a more efficient, future-ready network.

As part of this upgrade, we have installed new 160kW ultra-rapid chargers on the northbound side of the services. The site now features eight chargers, including a new fully accessible bay, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to making charging easier and more inclusive for every EV driver.

Our CEO, Delvin Lane, said:
“Completing the northbound installation is an exciting milestone, not only for InstaVolt but for the future of public charging in the UK. Corley is the first motorway services to support its ultra-rapid chargers with on-site battery storage, demonstrating how smart energy management can deliver reliable, scalable and sustainable charging as EV adoption grows.”

Welcome Break CEO, John Diviney, added:
“At Welcome Break, we’re proud to be leading the way in transforming motorway services for the future. This development reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering a seamless and reliable EV charging experience for all drivers.”

Corley builds on our experience at the Winchester Superhub, where we combine battery storage with on-site solar generation to support ultra-rapid charging. These projects demonstrate how the right energy solutions can strengthen the grid, improve reliability and support the UK’s transition to electric mobility.

With more than 2,200 chargers operating at over 99% uptime and powered entirely by 100% renewable energy, we’re continuing to set the benchmark for reliability, accessibility and innovation in public EV charging across the UK.
