Top Electric Car Myths… Busted!

With COP26 fast approaching, you might be wondering what you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. Reuse and recycling are going to be hot topics – but you might also be considering a bigger change, like switching to an EV.

We know there are a lot of horror stories out there about electric cars. So we’re here to set the record straight. Driving an EV is no less convenient than a traditional petrol car – and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment while you drive, too.

We’ve rounded up some of the most common myths about electric vehicles and busted them wide open…

Myth: Electric cars are too expensive

This is one we hear a lot. We’re not going to deny the fact that EVs are a little more expensive than petrol or diesel cars right now. But, we also can’t deny that electricity is cheaper than petrol or diesel – meaning any initial expense is quickly offset as you’re paying less to keep your car running.

Charging at home on a low tariff with an eco-friendly energy supplier – and charging on the go with a network like InstaVolt, where there are no hidden fees or connection charges – is the best way to keep on track of your expenditure.

Electric cars also have fewer moving parts, meaning lower maintenance costs – and EVs valued under £40,000 are exempt from road tax. Savings all round!

Myth: Electric cars don’t have enough range to make long journeys

EV range anxiety is no joke: it’s one of the biggest barriers to electric adoption. But it’s important to remember that EV battery technology is improving all the time.

The average EV has a range of around 200 miles – meaning all day-to-day journeys are easily within your reach.

On longer journeys, we need to change the way we think about refuelling. In a traditional petrol or diesel car, drivers tend to fill their tanks to the brim. But in an EV, a ‘little and often’ approach is more viable. As long as you top up to a minimum of 80% battery, you’ll have enough to get you to your next charge.

Myth: It takes too long to charge an EV
