Battery system installation completed at M6 Corley services
We are pleased to share that work on our battery storage installation at Welcome Break Corley services on the M6 is now complete, marking the first time a UK motorway charging location has been supported by an on-site battery system.
Our new battery technology stores electricity on site and delivers it directly to our chargers. By doing so, we reduce the need for large grid connections, maintain consistent charging speeds during busy periods and improve overall site resilience. This approach enables us to scale charging capacity efficiently while supporting the wider energy system.
As part of the development, we upgraded the existing infrastructure with new 160kW ultra-rapid chargers. The northbound side now hosts eight chargers, including a fully accessible bay, while the southbound side features seven chargers. These improvements ensure drivers have access to reliable, high-performance charging in both directions of travel.
Corley is the first of a series of battery installations we have planned. This programme follows the work we have undertaken at our Winchester Superhub, where on-site battery storage and solar generation support 44 ultra-rapid chargers.
Introducing battery technology across key strategic locations strengthens the resilience of our network and helps us deliver a dependable, scalable and sustainable charging experience as EV adoption continues to accelerate.
