Smart GPS Tracking: Transforming Cable Theft Prevention Across the UK’s EV Network
Cable theft from EV chargers is an escalating national problem, threatening the reliability of the UK’s charging infrastructure and undermining confidence among drivers. Targeting the high-value copper inside charging cables, thieves are causing widespread disruption, costly repairs and unnecessary delays on the road to net zero.
Since November 2023, hundreds of charging cables have been cut and stolen across InstaVolt’s nationwide network, with thefts nearly doubling so far this year compared to 2024 costing thousands in the replacement of cables alone – excluding labour, charger downtime and installing preventive measures.
To tackle this growing threat, InstaVolt is pioneering live GPS tracking technology in partnership with Trackit247 Ltd, delivering real-time protection for the UK’s EV charging network. Each charging cable is equipped with a geo-fenced tracker that is digitally linked to its exact charger location. If a cable is moved beyond its designated area, an alert is triggered within three seconds and sent directly to InstaVolt’s 24/7 security control centre. The system provides real-time updates allowing the security team to trace a cable’s movement instantly and, crucially, guide police to its live location if it is being transported by vehicle.
This intelligent integration of live GPS technology and policing support is pioneering for EV infrastructure protection as it can enable faster response times, support arrests and helping deter repeat offences. This proactive collaboration marks a major step forward in treating cable theft as criminal damage to critical national infrastructure.
Theft is being recorded across the entire UK, by working closely with regional police forces and crime commissioners, InstaVolt is helping to identify repeat targets and focus enforcement where it’s needed most.
Beyond GPS tracking, InstaVolt has implemented a layered defence strategy to protect its network. This includes the rollout of CableGuard™ sleeves, which contain a forensic liquid traceable under UV light; expanded CCTV coverage across high-risk locations; and enhanced site patrols integrated with InstaVolt’s national security site.
As the UK’s largest ultra-rapid charging network, InstaVolt remains at the forefront of security innovation, ensuring drivers can continue to rely on safe, sustainable and uninterrupted charging wherever the road takes them. Because true innovation isn’t just about charging faster – it’s about charging smarter and safer.
